Starting a Conversation
Every deal in Trove starts with a message. Whether you're a buyer interested in a shelf listing or a thrifter responding to a grail match, the process is the same: open the listing and tap Message Seller.
You don't need to have anything clever to say. A simple opening message works fine โ something like "Hi! I've had this on my grail list. Is this still available? Condition looks great." That's enough to open the thread and signal genuine interest.
Trove pre-fills a context card at the top of every new conversation showing the book title, edition, condition, and asking price. Both parties can see this card, which keeps the conversation anchored without either person having to repeat the details.
Why Speed Matters
If a book has multiple people with it on their grail list, a fresh listing can generate several messages in the first 10โ15 minutes. Sellers typically honor the deal in the order conversations progress โ not necessarily the order messages arrive. But being the first to send a serious message ("I'm ready to buy, where do I send payment?") puts you in the best position.
There's no "hold" mechanism in Trove โ sellers are free to sell to whomever they like. Good communication and prompt follow-through are the most reliable ways to win deals.
What the Other Person Sees
When you send a message, the other person receives a push notification immediately. The notification shows your username, the book title, and the first line of your message. Tapping it opens the conversation in Trove.
Your profile is visible in the conversation โ your username, avatar, seller rating (if you have one), and how long you've been on Trove. Buyers can tap your profile to see your full rating history and any public reviews. This is why building a good reputation matters: sellers can see who's serious and who isn't before they commit.
Real-Time Messaging
Trove's chat is real-time โ messages are delivered instantly when both parties are in the app, and via push notification when they're not. There's no delay or inbox queuing.
Conversations support:
- Text messages โ freeform, no character limit
- Photo sharing โ share additional condition photos, or photos of the copyright page for edition verification
- Emoji reactions โ quickly acknowledge a message
- Read receipts โ you can see when the other person has read your message
All conversations are stored in your Messages tab, organized by book listing. If you've had multiple conversations about the same book (e.g., talking to three different potential buyers), each is a separate thread but grouped under the same listing.
Agreeing on a Price
Most transactions settle at or near the listing price. But negotiation is common, especially for rare books or unusual editions. A few principles for negotiating well in Trove:
- Be direct. If the asking price is a bit high for you, say so: "Would you take $20 shipped?" is cleaner than dancing around it.
- Consider shipping in your offer. Sellers often price books without shipping in mind, so clarifying "all in, shipped" prevents confusion.
- Sellers: don't undercut your own listing. If you've posted at $25 and the buyer offers $20, you're not obligated to accept. But going back-and-forth for more than two rounds usually isn't worth either person's time.
- Walk away gracefully. If a deal doesn't work, a polite "No worries, good luck with the sale!" preserves the relationship. Trove is a small community.
Once you've agreed on a price and any shipping details, it's time to pay.
Paying via Venmo
Venmo is the most common payment method in Trove. When a seller has a Venmo handle linked to their profile, a Pay with Venmo button appears in the conversation once a price has been verbally agreed upon.
How the Venmo deep link works:
- Tap Pay with Venmo in the conversation.
- Trove opens the Venmo app (or venmo.com in a browser if Venmo isn't installed) with the seller's handle and the agreed price pre-filled.
- The memo line is pre-filled with the book title and "via Trove" so both parties have a record.
- You review the details in Venmo and confirm the payment.
- Once sent, return to Trove โ the conversation will have a "Payment Sent" message you can add manually to confirm for the seller.
Tip: Double-check the Venmo handle before confirming payment. The deep link pre-fills based on the seller's profile, but verify it matches who you're talking to โ especially for handles that look similar to common names.
Venmo payments to individuals are instant and generally free for standard transfers. Business accounts or instant bank transfers may incur a small fee โ this is between you and Venmo, not Trove.
Paying via PayPal
PayPal works similarly. When a seller has a PayPal handle or email linked to their profile, a Pay with PayPal button is available in the conversation.
How the PayPal deep link works:
- Tap Pay with PayPal in the conversation.
- Trove opens paypal.me/[username] (or the PayPal app if installed) with the agreed amount pre-filled.
- Review the payment details in PayPal โ confirm the recipient name matches the seller.
- Select "Friends and Family" if you know the seller and want to avoid fees, or "Goods and Services" if you want PayPal buyer protection.
- Confirm the payment.
Important: Selecting "Goods and Services" in PayPal gives you buyer protection but charges the seller a 2โ3% fee. Many private sellers on Trove prefer "Friends and Family" payments. Discuss this with the seller before paying โ it's common to agree on a price that accounts for the fee either way.
A Note on Payment Safety
Trove doesn't process, hold, or guarantee any payments. All money moves directly between you and the other party through Venmo or PayPal. While the vast majority of Trove transactions go smoothly, here are reasonable precautions:
- Check the seller's rating and review history before paying, especially for higher-value books
- Prefer sellers with multiple completed trades and at least a 4-star average
- For books over $50, consider using PayPal Goods and Services for the added protection
- Don't pay via Venmo or PayPal Friends and Family to an unrated seller for a high-value book unless you have other signals of trustworthiness (mutual follows, long account history)
Leaving a Seller Rating After a Trade
After the seller marks the transaction complete, you'll receive a prompt to leave a rating. This is important โ it's the primary way trust is built and maintained in the Trove community.
The rating has four components:
- Overall (1โ5 stars) โ your general assessment of the transaction
- Accuracy โ did the book match the condition description and photos?
- Communication โ was the seller responsive and clear throughout?
- Shipping โ did the book arrive well-packaged, in the time frame the seller described?
You can also leave a written review โ a sentence or two visible on the seller's public profile. Great reviews say something specific: "Shipped same day, packed in a Gemini mailer with extra padding, book was exactly as described" is far more useful than "Great seller!"
After you rate the seller, they have the opportunity to rate you as a buyer. Your buyer rating reflects responsiveness, clear communication, and timely payment.
Reporting Issues
If a transaction doesn't go as expected, Trove has a reporting system to address problems and protect the community.
Item Not as Described
If the book you received is materially different from what was listed โ wrong edition, significantly worse condition, or missing elements described (e.g., dust jacket listed but not included) โ here's what to do:
- First, message the seller directly in the conversation thread. Many issues resolve quickly and privately: "Hey, the book arrived but the DJ is clipped โ the listing said unclipped. Happy to work this out."
- If the seller is unresponsive or the issue can't be resolved, tap the Report button at the top of the conversation (three-dot menu โ Report).
- Select "Item not as described" and provide details.
- If you paid via PayPal Goods and Services, file a claim with PayPal directly โ Trove will cooperate with investigations.
Seller Stopped Responding
If a seller agrees to a deal, accepts payment, and then stops responding or never ships the book, this is a serious community violation. Report it via the conversation menu immediately. Trove can flag accounts and assist with dispute documentation.
For payment disputes where you used PayPal Goods and Services, PayPal's dispute resolution process is the most direct path to a refund.
Spam or Harassment
Any message that's abusive, harassing, or otherwise inappropriate should be reported using the conversation menu. Trove's community team reviews reports and can mute, restrict, or remove accounts that violate community guidelines.
Block: You can block any user at any time from their profile page. Blocked users can't message you, see your listings, or interact with your grail entries. This does not notify the blocked user.
